Introducing Our New Clinical Director at Takoma Therapy

Takoma Therapy is pleased to welcome our Clinical Director, Tanisha Sanders, beginning February 1. Here is what Tanisha has to say: With over 25 years of experience in mental health care and seven years within our practice community, her leadership reflects our commitment to ethical, thoughtful, and clinically excellent therapy.

A Commitment to Clinical Leadership

I am honored to step into the role of Clinical Director at Takoma Therapy beginning February 1. I have been part of the Takoma Therapy community for the past seven years, during which time I have had the privilege of teaching, mentoring, and supporting many clinicians across different stages of their professional development.
Until now, my work here has been balanced alongside my role with MCPS. This new chapter represents an important shift for me. There is a meaningful difference between contributing a portion of oneself and offering full attention and commitment. As my son prepares to graduate, I am entering a phase of life that allows me to more fully dedicate myself to one of my deepest callings: the practice of therapy and the cultivation of ethical, competent clinical care.

A Values-Based Approach to Therapy and Supervision

I am a dedicated mental health provider with over 25 years of experience, and my leadership style is grounded in service. I believe in supporting clinicians while also holding high expectations. I am exacting because this work matters. When someone entrusts us with their mental health and their healing, the responsibility is profound, and the standard must be high.

Honoring the Vision of Takoma Therapy

I deeply respect what Simone has built over the past seven years. Takoma Therapy's commitment to a diverse, multigenerational, and culturally responsive clinical team is rare in private practice and is a vital community resource. This work reduces stigma around mental health treatment because it is thoughtful, rigorous, and clinically competent. Being a steward of that vision is both an honor and a serious responsibility.

What This Means for Clinicians and Clients

To our clinicians and staff, this means a practice built on support, accountability, and shared standards. To our clients, it means care that is thoughtful, consistent, and grounded in clinical competence. Everything we do as a team is in service of those we are here to help.
Each clinician at Takoma Therapy was chosen with intention to do this work. My goal as Clinical Director is to bring my experience, clinical judgment, and steady leadership to support your work, your growth, and the continued development of this practice as a place of integrity, inclusion, and excellence. I am at your service.

Tanisha Sanders, LCSW-C

Therapist/Clinical Supervisor, Takoma Therapy

I am a clinical social worker licensed in Maryland, DC and New York. For over 20 years, I’ve worked with individuals of various ages, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, who have suffered from mild to severe mental health and substance abuse disorders. Experience and knowledge from this work guides my eclectic and conversational treatment style.

The aspect of my treatment that I believe consistently helps my clients to achieve their goals, is my ability to use humor, strength, transparency and kindness to make it safe for them to be honest with themselves - while also challenging them to demonstrate compassion and love to self for the marvelously imperfect person that he or she is at any given moment. This work takes place in the context of a commitment my clients and I make to show-up regularly in the therapy room where we reflect on how their stories, patterns, beliefs and defenses affect their ability to live the life they want to live. I call this, the process. The process can be like a lovely walk under clear blue skies - or a treacherous climb through a dark forest. Throughout the process, my clients are never alone and have never been broken by the climb, or even skinned a knee from an unexpected misstep. Frequently, they find themselves amused and in awe of who they recognize themselves to be as we make our way through their forest to their blue sky peace. I feel  honored to work with those who trust me to be a part of their process.

I have worked with clients since 1998, became a professional social worker in 2001, and hold a Master's in Social Work from Adelphi University.

Tanisha is also the our lead clinical supervisor and co-facilitator of our Racial Trauma Training Program.
