Why the Beginning of Therapy Matters: Our Approach to Intake Sessions

Starting therapy can bring up a mix of emotions. At Takoma Therapy, we understand that making the decision to begin therapy is a big step. That's why we take a thoughtful and intentional approach to the intake process.

The Benefits of a Three-Session Intake

Rather than rushing through everything in a single meeting, we offer a three-session intake. Why? Because we believe that strong therapy begins with a strong relationship.

A single intake session often doesn't provide enough time or space to fully share your story or determine whether the connection with your therapist feels right. By extending the process to three sessions, we ensure that:

  • You have ample time to discuss what brings you to therapy without feeling rushed.
  • Your therapist can develop a comprehensive understanding of your needs, history, and goals.
  • Both you and your therapist have the opportunity to assess whether it feels like a good match.

Our priority is that you feel cared for and supported right from the start. If at any point it seems like a different approach or therapist might better serve you, we'll help guide you to the right fit, whether within our practice or beyond.

What to Expect During the Intake Process

At Takoma Therapy, each intake session is a therapeutic conversation, not just a fact-finding mission. These initial meetings allow both you and your therapist to gain clarity on what brings you to therapy and how to proceed in a way that aligns with your needs.

Here's a general outline of what each session entails:

  • Session 1: You'll discuss your reasons for seeking therapy, current challenges, and personal goals. This is an open space for you to share what feels most important.
  • Session 2: Your therapist will explore your personal history, relationships, identity, and coping strategies to better understand the context of your present experiences.
  • Session 3: You and your therapist will reflect on how the intake process has felt so far and collaborate on next steps. If it feels like a good fit, you'll work together to shape your ongoing therapy. If not, we'll assist you in finding a better match.

Throughout the intake process, your therapist is there to listen closely, offer support, and help you articulate your needs. Even if you're just beginning, this is a meaningful step in your therapeutic journey.

Beginning Your Therapeutic Journey

After completing the intake sessions, you and your therapist will embark on your ongoing work together. This may involve setting specific goals, exploring various therapeutic approaches, and adjusting the plan as your needs evolve.

Ultimately, our in-depth intake process sets a strong foundation for the life-changing work of therapy. It ensures that you feel seen, heard, and supported as you navigate your unique path to wellbeing.
