We all understand that change can be uncomfortable. Brene Brown writes that “We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can't have both. Not at the same time.” In starting therapy, you are choosing courage over comfort, and that is a wonderful first step. Therapy is a process that requires courage to look at areas of our life that are no longer serving us. Through building our awareness of the ways that our past shapes our present, we begin to discover new possibilities for how we choose to live and relate to the world. At the same time, in recognizing what is not working, we also learn more about our innate resilience and strengths. While therapy is not a magic wand that fixes all of our problems; there is something truly magical about the therapeutic process and the connection that is formed within it.
I have an overall, eclectic and relational approach to therapy. I tend to utilize psychodynamic, humanistic, strengths-based, and cognitive-behavioral theories. When relevant, I will provide psychoeducation throughout treatment on topics including but not limited to trauma, attachment, defense mechanisms, and relationship dynamics.
I strongly believe in the healing power of the therapeutic relationship, so building safety and trust between us is something we will prioritize in our work together. This is especially important when a trauma history is present. My specialties include working with adults who have experienced childhood trauma and coping with its effects, or adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, stress, relationships, or later-in-life trauma. I have previously co-led trauma groups focusing on de-pathologizing childhood trauma for adult women.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the Maryland and Washington DC and a member of the ISSTD. I received my undergraduate degree at Towson University with a major in Psychology and minor in Family Studies. During my junior and senior years at Towson, I was a part of the Clinical Psychology program. I was able to learn from a leading psychologist in the field of trauma and dissociation. After graduating, I went on to earn my Master’s in Social Work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. There, I was able to expand on my clinical experiences as well as incorporate the values and ethics that Social Workers hold near and dear to our hearts.
I love being a part of Takoma Therapy’s team of therapists. I look forward to working with you, hearing your story, and beginning this therapeutic process together.
